The Arcata Plaza is located in the heart of the city and traditionally, where community comes together. In contrast, Arcata has become more and more divided on this particular issue and the tensions are only increasing. I believe we need to be creative when thinking about the Plaza and would like to see the Arcata businesses, local non-profits, the homeless, and city government come together in a structured mediation session. When all participants are involved in making a decision, there is a natural tendency to have greater respect for the process and the outcome. However, I will not tolerate individuals who are a threat to their fellow citizens or those who make demands without being willing to give back to the community. ( read more here )
Humboldt County is blessed with an abundance of natural resources and intelligent, creative individuals who should be encouraged to take their skills and product to market. I support local entrepreneurs and encourage the production of value-added products to export within and outside of Humboldt County. In addition, I support telecommunications, environmental consulting, and renewable energy technologies as a means to create high-quality jobs and keep money in our community. ( read more here )
Housing is one of the most basic human needs and extremely difficult to afford in Arcata. I support the Arcata first-time buyers program and will work to provide quality affordable housing for people of all incomes. I will develop a program to inspect and help upgrade substandard housing to make them safe for individuals and families. I will work to make subsidized housing more accessible to those who need it. I have volunteered on the Arcata Planning Commission since 2000 and gained practical experience with urban planning. I support compact, mixed-use development and in-fill projects as a means to address growth for Arcata. I support a stronger relationship between the Arcata City Council and Humboldt State University to proactively address HSU's decision to double the student enrollment and plan for the inevitable increase in growth.
Quality of life is what keeps people living here and I promise to maintain open space, farm and ranchlands. I will work to complete the bicycle and pedestrian networks connecting all commercial and residential areas giving the community greater options for choices in transportation.
HSU plays a vital role in Arcata's economy and major decisions made by HSU affect all the citizens of Arcata. I am in a very unique position to work as a bridge between HSU and Arcata. I would like to make the relationship positive for all of us. ( read more here )
